Is Osama bin Laden Dying … Again?

Posted by Matt on July 2nd, 2008

Which is closer to dying: Osama bin Laden or the CIA’s effort to catch him? Nothing has characterized the fruitlessness of the hunt for the al-Qaeda leader so much as the recurrent — and mostly inaccurate — reports that he is seriously ailing, or even at death’s door. In 2002, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said bin Laden had kidney disease, and that he had required a dialysis machine when he lived in Afghanistan. That same year, the FBI’s top counterterrorism official, Dale Watson, said, “I personally think he is probably not with us anymore.” Since then, of course, bin Laden has appeared on multiple videos looking healthier than ever.

BUSH MUST BE PROSECUTED

Posted by Matt on June 30th, 2008

THE DEAN OF A NEW ENGLAND law school announced that the departure of President Bush next January may not provide him and his cronies with a sanctuary from justice. The message from Lawrence Velvel, dean and co-founder of the Massachusetts School of Law, is:

Where impeachment ends, an independent tribunal begins. Punishment of the guilty is being openly discussed by conference planners—including capital punishment.

How to stop the Great Crash of ‘08

Posted by Matt on June 30th, 2008

Spengler / Asia Times

The oil price has doubled in the past year because the US Federal Reserve panicked over risks to the over-leveraged financial system and flooded markets with excess liquidity. The world is willing to pay arbitrarily high prices to hedge against inflation, but the cost of inflation hedges drags down the world economy. Last week’s spike in commodity prices and swoon in global stock markets points the way to a deep and prolonged fall in economic activity.

US gives ‘major’ boost to covert ops in Iran: report

Posted by Matt on June 29th, 2008

The United States gave a major boost to covert operations against Iran with Congress’s approval last year of President George W. Bush’s request for 400 million dollars, a US magazine reported Sunday.

The move reveals a “major escalation” in clandestine operations aimed at destabilizing the Islamic republic’s religious leadership amid concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, said the report in the New Yorker magazine citing former military, intelligence, and congressional sources.

The gun-rights fight isn’t over

(L.A. Times Opinion) - The Supreme Court’s decision in the District of Columbia vs. Heller case settles a long, heated debate, finding the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to own weapons for self-defense — not merely a right related to membership in a “well-regulated militia.”

What Your Government Knows About Cannabis And Cancer — And Isn’t Telling You

Posted by Matt on June 26th, 2008

Senator Ted Kennedy is putting forward a brave face following his recent surgery but the sad reality remains. Even with successful surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatment, gliomas — a highly aggressive form of brain cancer that strikes approximately 10,000 Americans annually — tragically claim the lives of 75 percent of its victims within two years and virtually all within five years.

But what if there was an alternative treatment for gliomas that could selectively target the cancer while leaving healthy cells intact? And what if federal bureaucrats were aware of this treatment, but deliberately withheld this information from the public?

Sadly, the questions posed above are not entirely hypothetical. Let me explain.

At Last, Some Truth About Iraq and Afghanistan

Posted by Matt on June 25th, 2008

Eric Margolis / Lew Rockwell.com

PARIS – After a sea of lies and a tsunami of propaganda, the ugly truth behind the Iraq and Afghanistan wars finally emerged into full view this week.

Four major western oil companies, Exxon, Mobil, Shell, BP and Total, are about to sign US-brokered no-bid contracts with the US-installed Baghdad regime to begin exploiting Iraq’s oil fields. Saddam Hussein had kicked these firms out three decades ago when he nationalized Iraq’s foreign-owned oil industry for the benefit of Iraq’s national development. The Baghdad regime is turning back the clock.

This agreement comes as talks are continuing between the Washington and its Baghdad client regime over future US basing rights in Iraq. After some face-saving Iraqi objections, it is expected that Baghdad will sign a compact with Washington giving US forces control of Iraq and its air space in a manner very similar to Great Britain’s colonial arrangement with Iraq.

Iran Attack Scenario: A Catastrophe

Posted by Matt on June 25th, 2008

David DeBatto
Global Research

“Israel has said a strike on Iran will be “unavoidable” if the Islamic regime continues to press ahead with alleged plans for building an atom-bomb.” (London Daily Telegraph, 6/11/2008)

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany joined President Bush on Wednesday in calling for further sanctions against Iran if it does not suspend its uranium enrichment program.” Mr. Bush stressed again that “all options are on the table,” which would include military force. (New York Times, 6/11/2008)

WarWe are fast approaching the final six months of the Bush administration. The quagmire in Iraq is in its sixth painful year with no real end in sight and the forgotten war in Afghanistan is well into its seventh year. The “dead enders” and other armed factions are still alive and well in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan again controls most of that country. Gas prices have now reached an average of $4.00 a gallon nationally and several analysts predict the price will rise to $5.00-$6.00 dollars per gallon at the pump by Labor Day. This, despite assurances by some major supporters of the decision to invade Iraq that the Iraq war “will pay for itself” (Paul Wolfowitz) or that we will see “$20.00 per barrel” oil prices if we invade Iraq (Rupert Murdoch).

Who will Paul supporters vote for now?

Posted by Matt on June 24th, 2008

Maine’s Ron Paul supporters made a strong showing at the state Republican Convention, even electing one of their own as a delegate to the national convention.

But now that Paul is officially out of the race, who will they support?

A story on politico.com details their options, from Libertarian candidate Bob Barr to Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin. And, of course, the campaigns for major party candidates Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama say they will reach out to the Paul diehards.

Closer to home, Bonnie Jean Tucker, a Paul supporter from Augusta, said she’s not going to vote for anyone on the ballot.

“I’m not supporting McCain,” she said. “I’m probably going to write-in Ron Paul. I think a lot of Ron Paul people feel that way.”

Tucker, who had filed to run for the state House of Representatives as a Republican, said she dropped out of the race because she doesn’t feel part of the party. An independent, she joined the GOP this year to support Paul.

She would have faced incumbent Rep. Patsy Crockett, D-Augusta.

In the presidential race, Tucker said she doesn’t see much difference between Obama and McCain.

“I think they are about the same,” she said. “I don’t think there’s a lesser evil.”

Wealthy Jews Now Leaving Israel

Posted by Matt on June 24th, 2008

The wealthiest of Israel’s elite are starting to seek out new homes elsewhere. This should tell us something about what may be in store. Some of us may remember Marc Rich, possibly the biggest tax dodger in US history, who fled to Israel. About seven years ago, just as Clinton was leaving office, Marc Rich got a pardon dropped in his lap. He may have been the first of many wealthy Jews looking to escape Israel.

McCain Adviser: Terrorist Attack Would Help McCain in Election

Posted by Matt on June 24th, 2008

June 23, 2008 4:05 PM

McCain adviser Charlie Black told Fortune Magazine that national security events help Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

“The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an ‘unfortunate event,’ says Black. ‘But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who’s ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us.’ As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. ‘Certainly it would be a big advantage to him,’ says Black.”

Per ABC News’ Bret Hovell, McCain distanced himself from the remarks today.

“I cannot imagine why he would say it,” McCain said. “It’s not true. I’ve worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America. My record is very clear. The Armed Services Committee, and pieces of legislation. Sponsoring with Joe Lieberman the 9/11 Commission so we could find out the causes and how to fix the challenges that we face to fix the security of our nation. I cannot imagine it. And, uh. So, I would … If he said that, and I do not know the context, I strenuously disagree.”

Regardless of McCain distancing himself from Black’s sentiment, Democratic consultants have said similar things to me.

UPDATE: Hovell reports that outside McCain’s Fresno fundraiser, Black read a statement: “I deeply regret the comments—they were inappropriate. I recognize that John McCain has devoted his entire adult life to protecting his country.”
